What is a blog, anyways?

I know this may sound odd, especially given that I have already writ four previous blogs; however, I still have zero clue what a blog is. I’ve kind of just been meandering along, writing along the lines of the prompt, all the while remaining confused on what makes up a blog. I just looked up the definition of blog on Google, and now that leaves me even more confused.

The definition of blog, as stated by Google, is a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual of a small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style. The reason this confuses me is because of other websites that have the same style, such as Facebook or Twitter. The posts on there are regularly updated, written by a single/few people, majorly informal, and (obviously), on a website. Yet, it seems that a blog is only a blog if the person calls it a blog.

Along those lines, a blog can also be just a random talking point. For example, a blog about veganism could provide recipes, remind you to get nutrients, provide other life advice or talk about how veganism has affected the “bloggers” life. These are objectively a recipe site, a health excerpt, a life enrichment excerpt or a personal column. Yet, these are also blogs? I simply just do not understand.

In conclusion, the concept of a blog simply eludes me. I do not understand why blogs are a thing separate from posts and/or advice/opinion columns. Maybe, maybe there is a definition that is unknown to me. Yet, at this point, I will leave you with one question: What is a blog?
