The research process has gone well for me so far. To be fair, I found most if not all of my sources before I had even decided definitively that I was going to write my paper on the gender roles in Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. The reason why I did this was because I wanted to make sure that I could find enough scholarly sources on the subject, since it was an animated children’s cartoon from the mid to late 2000s.
Surprisingly enough, there were five scholarly sources that I found, despite having to dig through the world wide web. I could not find many scholarly sources on sites such as JSTOR or the library catalog, so I had to prowl and scour the Google to find my academic sources. They were buried, but eventually, I found that there were some sources with a works cited page, which indicates an academic source.
Some of the academic sources were short, around five pages or less brushing over the topic in comparison. However, then I found a thesis paper ninety-two pages long, a model United Nations Conference paper thirty-two pages long and a seminar paper excerpt about seven pages long. For the model UN paper and the seminar paper excerpt, as well as all of the shorter academic sources and the popular sources, I was able to read those in depth. However, because of the length of the thesis, I only chose to skim the paper and I still got a lot of information from the paper.
Luckily, for my paper, I had just finished watching Avatar for the second time, so the episodes, the themes and the tropes were fresh in my mind. This was partly the reason that I had chosen to write about this topic; the other one is that I just love the series.
sounds like a fun topic! Will you be focusing on one character in particular or what aspect of gender roles will you focus on?
