CHAZ (United States Demilitarized Zone)

There are many strong feelings on both sides about the demilitarized zone in the city of Seattle, Washington. I call it demilitarized because they got rid of the police, basically a domestic military. And I just wanted to give my thoughts on the state of affairs within this experiment.

Just to preface, my views on CHAZ, which is the name for the zone, are left libertarian views. Continue at the risk of being triggered.

No doubt if you have been following the news directly succeeding the death of George Floyd and the anti-police protests, the anti-protests police and the anti-police riots, you have heard about the self-proclaimed six-block autonomous territorial entity in Seattle. This was formed after the police HQ in the area was vacated due to the riots. Mainly ‘Black Lives Matter’, ‘Antifa’, and ‘Defund the Police’ activists have set up the area in response to the police brutality rampant across the country. They have been holding rallies and protests in the area antithetical and in response to the authoritative force that the U.S. government is exerting on its citizens.

They have declared themselves and the six-block area that they occupy independent from the U.S. government. As you can probably tell from the statement of my views above, I have no problem with their stance. I would have a problem if this situation was violent anarchy, but the simple fact is that there is very little to no violence in said autonomous zone. Numerous reports from outlets, excluding Fox News and other far-right sources, on this situation have equated the behavior to a giant college block party. Coming from a rural background, and thus a relatively more conservative background, many people that are around me are saying that this is anarchy and the government must occupy the area until order is restored. I think that this mindset is somewhat ignorant, to put it kindly. People are just experimenting with what to do because there is not a lot of good news to go around lately.
