English 100 has been an entertaining class so far. However, something that I would like to learn about in class is how to formulate a good and civil argument. This is intriguing to me because I am in frequent disagreement with people around my hometown, as I am really, really far politically left and my family and town citizens are pretty damn conservative. I would like to learn more about engaging in civil arguments because sometimes arguments escalate and I would like to learn how to keep them civil, while also continuing to express my ideas and not being told that I am being too rude and thus being stifled. Also, formulating an argument into a specific and compartmentalized structure would help as sometimes I just go head-first into an argument without any organization and it just seems sloppy and ineffective.
This would also be a useful skill to have for writing persuasive pieces, i.e. articles. It is always important to be persuasive in opinion pieces, just ask Fox News or CNN or any other news outlet. Quick aside: I do not subscribe to either of their ideologies and do not recommend either of the corporate rhetoric that spews out of their host’s mouths. Nonetheless, both stations are extremely persuasive to their regular viewers. I feel like this would also go hand in hand with this summary and response section we are currently in. I cannot think of any other thing that I would like to go over this year at the moment.
Hey Justin! I think this is a perfect topic to learn about. I think being able to formulate a persuasive and unbiased argument is important in our education and will help with so many things throughout our life. I come from a conservative environment as well and am far left on the spectrum so these kinds of arguments can turn out heated and unpersuasive. I think this is a perfect topic to learn and improve on.
